Here at Sunningwell we aim to give every child the opportunity to be the very best they can be and this includes in sport.
Our Sports Co-Ordinator enters our school into many varied sporting events across the county. We are very keen to ensure each child experiences as many varied sports as possible during their time at the school.

June Sports Update
Some children from Y3/4 were selected to compete in the Tri-golf Tournament at Frilford Heath Golf Club. They were all a credit to themselves, their parents and the school as they all displayed the school values of respect, determination, support and teamwork with focus and their passion shone through. They were rewarded by becoming Vale Champions and will now go forward to compete in the Sainsbury’s School Games in July. We are very proud of them all!
Both Years 5/6 and Years 3/4 displayed tremendous determination and teamwork in the local Quad Kids competition at Tilsley Park; where they finished 5th and 6th respectively out of 17 schools. Individually Max finished 7th overall in his group with Kiyan 7th, Molly 5th and Sharon 4th in the Y3/4 group. Amazing results, well done all!
May Sports Update
Again with little practice but huge amounts of enthusiasm our Y5/6 team was placed 3rd in the Abingdon Partnership Badminton Competition and our Year 3/4 Red Tennis Team were placed 4th. Congratulations to all who played.
March-April Sports Update
Spring saw our Year 5/6 Hi 5 Netball team become Vale Champions. This meant that they qualified to play in the Sainbury’s School Games where they were placed 5th in Oxfordshire. Again the way they played as a team was remarkable as they hadn’t had much practice together. Excellent work!
Our Y3/4 Mixed Under 9 Football Team were undefeated in the Vale Competition and became Vale Champions. They also qualified to play in the Sainsbury’s School Games where they finished a very creditable 6th place.
February Sports Update
Our Y5/6 football team were runners up in the ‘Small Schools 6-a-side Competition’. They were also runners up in the ‘Small School 7-a-side League’. Well done to all the players who did the school proud in terms of their team work and sportsmanship!
December Sports Update
On Monday 7th November Sunningwell Tag Rugby Team came 3rd out of 24 schools. The team showed friendship, determination, teamwork and TOBY (Think Of Others Before Yourself). We won every game but one. We missed 1st and 2nd by 1 point. Well Done Sunningwell Rugby Team!
On Thursday 8th December, 13 people from KS2 represented the school in a Dance Festival at the New Theatre, Oxford. We had a great time and would love to do things like that more often. It was choreographed by Scarlet and Ella and Phoebe helped teach it to all the people.
Thank you to our Reporters from Class 4 for these fantastic updates!
April Sports Update
Wow! What a busy start to the year Team Sunningwell has had, we started the year by entering some of the Year 5 and 6’s into a badminton tournament, for the first time in school history, once again the team spirit didn’t fail and we came a fantastic 3rd place. This was quickly followed by a mixed Year3/4 team playing football for the Oxfordshire Sainsbury’s School Games and a Year5/6 girls football team playing in a 6 aside competition, who qualified for the Area Championships. We have also seen our Hi 5 netball team complete in the Vale Finals and came in a very respectful 4th place.
We sent a huge squad of gymnasts covering all age ranges, enter into a competition at the Berinsfield Gymnastics Club. Our Year 3/4s deserve a specific mention who put on a fantastic display and finished in overall 3rd place, with Katie finishing in overall 2nd place for her age group. Well done gymnasts!!
And last but not least, we also took a team of Year5/6s who are our budding Serena Williams and Rafael Nadals to the Orange Tennis competition held at the White Horse Leisure Centre. Having won their group and semi finals, to finally tie the final with another local primary school and proceed to the County Finals in June. Please come back in June to find out how they got on……

October Sports Update
Well, we have certainly hit the ground running this term and quite literally too, with our Year 5/6 Cross Country team in training for their first event at Tilsley Park before the half term break. We have also started training up our new intake of Sports Leaders, and they are certainly eager to take on their responsibilities, especially with the new School House System well and truly in place. You will hear more on that through the course of the year.
Our runners are not the only sports teams in action this coming month, our footballers take to the pitch in their first tournament this academic year, we have already had some exciting friendly games and wish everyone the best of luck.
Go Team Sunningwell!!
